History
Traversella is Val Chiusella's most popular tourist destination. This ancient village is located in a sunny green valley, which is an ideal departure point for foot, horse or bike excursions. A short distance away can be found a rock climbing club and a ski resort with facilities for cross-country and down hill skiing. You can also take part in Nature Trails.
The mines have been active since the Roman era. Activity increased in the medieval period, flourished during the Napoleonic era and continued to operate until 1971. Today the area is home to an interesting mining museum and tours of the mines are available. The mountains around Traversella have yielded many examples of the original inhabitants of the valley from the Neolithic period. Wall carvings at locations such as "Path of the Souls" and "Cross Stone" provide for exciting excursions - see 'Available Excursions'
